Ads and Signage for a Festive Easter Event

The project pictured here was done for a special seasonal event at the Red Door, located in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego. The Red Door is known for its original seasonal menus based on fresh, local, organic and sustainable ingredients, as well as for offering a unique “casual fine dining” experience. This particular event was to be an all-natural Easter egg dyeing party for children, held at the restaurant and hosted by the Red Door’s chef, Karrie Hills. I met with Kelsey Doonan, the event coordinator, who gave me a rundown on event details, including the specific printed pieces needed. I was excited to start work on these promotional and event signage pieces, which were to coincide with the look and feel of the restaurant’s branding, but also bring to mind the playful fun of spring and egg dyeing, through colorful touches of pastels and watercolor effects.

Kelsey followed up with several digital inspiration boards full of spring party ideas, which helped steer me in the right direction, so that I could quickly create and find the perfect design elements to bring together. Most of the work was done on the computer, including digital brushes I used to create the watercolor effects on the signs. The final pieces were utilized in both print and digital format (e.g., for advertising the event at the restaurant, as well as online). The Red Door has a phenomenal staff, and one of the bonuses of working on this was getting to know many of the wonderful people involved in the restaurant’s day-to-day operations. I was also fortunate enough to work with my sister, Stacey, on this project, as she was brought on to be the photographer for the event; the slideshow above gives a glimpse of the beautiful job she did of capturing the day.

Custom Invitations for a Special Bat Mitzvah

This project is a lovely example of custom Bat Mitzvah invitations. A key element of the invitation is the custom gatefold design, which provides a reveal effect. Vibrant, eye-catching colors of pink and teal were chosen, along with a subtle sea-foam green. These guided the choice of paper and ribbon. Satin ribbon, sparkling gems and shimmer envelopes were the finishing touches, once everything had been printed and assembled.

By going over the details with Gali and her mom, Yael, along with event planner Catherine Bachelier, early on, I was able to clearly visualize how the different elements of the invitation would come together. Along with Gali’s favorite colors, it was also important to include parchment paper in the design, as Gali and Yael wanted the suite to provide a nod to the beauty of the Torah scroll. Gali’s grandmother would be providing Gali’s name in Hebrew, by way of her own hand-drawn calligraphy, which I was able to turn into digital art in order to be printed on the parchment paper (for the gatefold flaps). In order to achieve the torn edges effect for the front of the gatefold, I obtained a special ruler to tear each strip of printed parchment paper by hand, so that the individual strips containing Gali’s Hebrew name would appear diagonally aligned in a specific way (as seen in the slideshow above). These custom Bat Mitzvah invitations had just the right balance of color, sophistication, sparkle and fun to reflect Gali’s effervescent personality and her special day.

There are four cards included in the suite: invitation card and lined envelope, RSVP postcard, party card and envelope, as well as a folded thank you card and envelope. There is also a digital save the date that was sent out electronically.

The items featured here are few examples of the work I did for a local small business by the name of Uberfood, a food delivery service started on the premise that there is a growing need for healthy, organic and convenient meal and catering options in our communities. One of the company’s co-founders, Lisa Barnhouse-Gal, contacted me, as Uberfood was in need of graphic design services at the time, and she and I had successfully worked together previously on a couple of design items for her son’s Bar Mitzvah.

As luck would have it, I was able to work side by side with my sister, Stacey, who took all of the wonderful photos featured in the layouts above. Because Uberfood already had its logo in place, my main task was meeting with Lisa and going over the promotional marketing materials the company still needed in order to spread the word about its freshly-prepared menu and services (i.e., corporate and residential delivery and catering). Using Stacey’s photographs and Uberfood’s established branding, I created a selection of postcard and door hanger layouts (such as those displayed in the slideshow above). Upon client approval, the items were then printed and distributed to various locations throughout the county.

The slideshow above shows several character drawings that I worked on for a client needing fun, approachable graphics for a future website project centered on online customer service. These characters were to be in the form of cartoon-like illustrations that fit specific character profiles the client provided, including the ones displayed here: Developer, Designer, Copywriter, Digital Advertising Pro, Digital Marketer, Mobile Expert, Social Media Pro and Concierge.

After receiving a brief description of each character, including the look and feel the illustration should portray, I went to work sketching different versions of the characters off the top of my head. In general, the drawings were to be friendly, appealing, professional and diverse. Most were to be donning a bow tie (per the client’s direction). There were other initial sketches that came before the ones you see here. After some revising and minor modifications, the final pencil sketches were put into vector format and completed in Illustrator with my Wacom tablet. Since childhood, I have never grown tired of drawing characters of all shapes and sizes. In short, this project was truly an enjoyable exercise for me! (Note: image color to be added to this particular project at the client’s discretion.)
